Innovative tool for SDM

Introduction

Flottweg, a leader in industrial separation technology, faced challenges in accurately measuring the density of a water/solids slurry due to scaling on the Rhosonics SDM-4 sensor, which affected data reliability. Rhosonics addressed the issue by designing an innovative cleaning tool—a flush system featuring an extra port. This system sprays the sensor clean, simplifying daily maintenance and preventing buildup. This solution restored measurement accuracy, satisfying the client and enabling future installations.

Our solution

To address the issue, the R&D department at Rhosonics developed a flush system integrated into the spool piece. This innovative solution allows the pipe and sensor to be cleaned daily without removing the sensor, ensuring a clear measurement surface and effectively resolving the scaling issue. Additionally, in 2022, Rhosonics installed a Pt100 sensor to monitor liquid temperature and compensate for the significant temperature fluctuations, further optimizing the SDM’s performance. The team also provided recalibration and start-up guidance to restore the system’s accuracy and reliability.

Results

The solution was highly effective, providing reliable and consistent data. With this setup, density measurements are now stable and vary by only 0.01 S.G. compared to manual readings. The customer is very satisfied with the results, and the unit continues to operate successfully at a plant in Austria, with preparations underway for its next deployment in Germany.
